Students from Other Colleges & Universities

Students enrolled at other accredited colleges and universities may be eligible to participate in select WVU Education Abroad programs. West Virginia University welcomes applications from students across the state and beyond who wish to join a WVU faculty-led program or participate in a WVU exchange program.

Whether you're attending another institution in West Virginia, a community college, or a university elsewhere in the United States, WVU Education Abroad can help you access international experiences while continuing progress toward your degree.

Students are responsible for obtaining approval from their home institution regarding the transfer of academic credit earned through a WVU program.

Students from West Virginia Colleges & Universities

As West Virginia's flagship land-grant university, WVU is committed to expanding access to international education opportunities for students across the state.

Students enrolled at other West Virginia higher education institutions are encouraged to explore WVU faculty-led and exchange programs. Our team works directly with students and their home institutions to facilitate participation and support the transfer of academic credit whenever possible.

Past participants have included students from community colleges, regional universities, and other public and private institutions throughout West Virginia.

Short-Term Faculty-Led Programs

Students from other institutions may apply to participate in many WVU faculty-led study abroad programs offered during spring break and summer terms.

If admitted, students will complete the WVU Non-Degree and Visiting Student Application process and register for the associated WVU course(s). Academic credit will be awarded by WVU and may be transferred back to the student's home institution according to that institution's policies.

Because faculty-led programs are often short in duration and include a cohort of WVU students traveling together, these programs are frequently the easiest option for visiting students.

Semester Exchange Programs

Students enrolled at another institution may also be eligible to participate in select WVU Exchange Programs.

Participation requires admission as a non-degree or visiting student at WVU and approval from the student's home institution. Exchange participants will register through WVU and remain responsible for understanding how coursework completed abroad will transfer back to their degree program.

Students interested in a semester exchange are encouraged to contact Education Abroad early in the planning process, as exchange opportunities often require additional academic planning and institutional approvals.

How to Apply

  1. Contact WVU Education Abroad to discuss eligibility and available program options.
  2. Identify a program that aligns with your academic goals and degree requirements.
  3. Consult with your home institution to determine whether academic credit earned through the program will transfer toward your degree and to complete any required approvals.
  4. Apply to the study abroad program through the WVU Abroad application system.
  5. If selected to participate, complete the WVU Non-Degree and Visiting Student Application process and any required enrollment steps.
  6. Follow all program deadlines and pre-departure requirements provided by WVU Education Abroad.

Important: Academic credit transfer is determined by your home institution. Students should consult with their academic advisor, registrar, or study abroad office before applying to ensure the program meets their degree requirements.
