Semester Exchange Programs

Study Abroad for a Semester or Academic Year

A WVU Exchange Program allows you to spend a semester or academic year studying at one of our international partner universities while remaining a WVU student. You'll take courses abroad, experience a new culture, and continue making progress toward your degree.

Many students are surprised to learn that exchange programs are often one of the most affordable ways to study abroad. Participants continue paying WVU tuition and fees and may be able to use federal financial aid, student loans, and many WVU scholarships toward their experience.

One of the most common misconceptions about studying abroad is that students must speak another language. In reality, many partner universities offer courses taught in English, making exchange programs accessible to students who only speak English.

Why Choose an Exchange Program?

Exchange programs offer an opportunity to experience daily life as a university student in another country while earning credit toward your WVU degree.

Benefits of participating in an exchange program include:

  • Living and studying in another country for a semester or academic year
  • Taking courses that count toward your degree requirements
  • Building independence, confidence, and adaptability
  • Developing intercultural communication skills
  • Gaining experience valued by graduate schools and employers
  • Creating friendships and professional connections around the world
  • Exploring new cultures beyond a traditional tourist experience

Is an Exchange Program Right for You?

A semester or year-long exchange may be a good fit if you:

  • Want a more immersive international experience
  • Are interested in living abroad for several months
  • Enjoy exploring new places and perspectives
  • Want to study alongside local and international students
  • Are looking for an experience that combines academics, cultural learning, and personal growth

Students from a wide range of majors participate in exchange programs each year. With planning and advisor support, many students are able to stay on track for graduation while studying abroad.

Affordability

Many students assume a semester abroad is financially out of reach. In reality, exchange programs can be one of the most cost-effective study abroad options available.

Students participating in a WVU Exchange Program generally:

  • Pay WVU tuition and fees
  • Remain eligible for many forms of federal financial aid
  • May utilize eligible scholarships and student loans
  • Pay housing and living expenses directly to the host institution or local providers

Costs vary by destination, housing option, and personal spending habits, but many students find that a semester abroad is comparable to the cost of a semester at WVU.

Planning Ahead

Semester exchange programs require advance planning to ensure sufficient time for advising, academic approvals, partner university applications, housing arrangements, and visa processing.

Students interested in a semester exchange should submit an Education Abroad Advising Request by February 15 of the academic year before their intended term abroad.

For example, students hoping to study abroad during Fall 2027 or Spring 2028 should submit an advising request by February 15, 2027.

Beginning the process early provides the greatest number of program options and allows time to develop an academic plan that supports your graduation goals.

Direct Enroll Options

A small number of WVU partner universities have limited exchange capacity. In some cases, students may have the option to participate through a Direct Enroll program instead.

Direct Enroll students study at the same host institution but pay a program fee established for that specific university rather than standard WVU tuition and fees. Program costs and requirements are provided in advance so students can compare available options before applying.
