Not every student wants to spend a semester abroad—and that's okay.

WVU Short-Term Programs provide opportunities to study, intern, and learn abroad during university breaks and the summer. These programs are designed for students who want an international experience while balancing academic requirements, work commitments, athletics, student organizations, or other responsibilities.

Whether you're interested in traveling over spring break, spending a few weeks abroad during the summer, or gaining international work experience through an internship, short-term programs offer a flexible way to explore the world while earning academic credit.


WVU Faculty-led Programs

Faculty-led programs are WVU courses taught abroad by WVU faculty members. Students earn WVU academic credit while learning directly in the locations connected to their coursework.

Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom through site visits, cultural activities, guest speakers, and hands-on experiences that bring course concepts to life.

Faculty-led programs typically range from one to several weeks in length and are offered during:

  • Spring Break
  • Maymester
  • Summer

WVU offers more than 50 short-term programs annually across a wide range of academic disciplines and destinations.

WVU Affiliated Summer Programs

WVU Affiliated Summer Programs are offered through trusted study abroad organizations that have been vetted and approved by WVU. These programs vary in length, destination, and academic focus, providing students with a wide range of opportunities to study, intern, conduct research, volunteer, or gain other international experiences.

Affiliated programs offer flexibility for students seeking options beyond WVU faculty-led programs and can be a great fit for those looking for specific destinations, academic interests, or career-focused experiences such as international internships.

Students earn academic earn course credit through the WVU Transient Process for Study Abroad and receive guidance from a dedicated Education Abroad Coordinator throughout the planning process. Students must be approved by the WVU Education Abroad office through the Ed Abroad Advising Request before enrolling into an affiliated program. 

WVU students can participate in international internships through affiliated program providers, allowing them to gain professional experience while living and learning abroad.
